On 13th Anniversary of Torture Camp
Actions January 8-15 Call for Immediate Guantanamo Closure
As the Senate’s Torture Report has revealed torture in U.S. “black sites” and particularly in its off-shore prison in Guatanamo Bay, advocates for peoples’ rights from the legal, religious, medical and campus communities are speaking out this month.

Andy Worthington, a journalist based in the U.K. will be a key participant. Author of The Guantanamo Files: Stories of 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison, he has reported extensively on prisoners at Guantanamo Bay seized in what he calls the “brutal and fundamentally lawless ‘war on terror’ that the Bush administration declared.” Worthington will be representing the Close Guantánamo campaign and the We Stand With Shaker campaign. On the eve of the thirteenth anniversary, he says “Everything about Guantánamo is fundamentally unjust, and has been since the day the prison opened.”
Debra Sweet, Director, World Can’t Wait, has led protests to close Guantanamo since 2002. “The Bush regime opened the torture camp at Guantanamo Bay not just to imprison captives but to send a message to the world that the U.S. could operate with impunity outside the norms of international law. The Obama administration has had six years to close it, punish those who ordered the torture, and forever repudiate indefinite detention and secret rendition as national policy, but to its great discredit, has not. We who care about justice demand the closure of Guantanamo immediately.”
