I am hearing from around the world, and especially Pakistan, that our protest against U.S. drone bombings was much appreciated. We got as close to CIA headquarters as we could, then marched to Dick Cheney’s new house.
Drones and artificial intelligence are the weapons of choice for US investment in expanding empire and occupation. We should and will be doing a lot more visible protest of the military and CIA drone programs… (read more at debra.worldcantwait.net)
We at worldcantwait.net have gathered many articles on the U.S. government’s response to the earthquake in Haiti. Many are comparing it to George Bush’s response to Katrina, but much worse given the lives lost and the desperate – imposed – poverty there. We demand:
Let the aid get through! Let the Haitian people organize! Stop U.S. military interference with international rescue and humanitarian aid!

World Can’t Wait is now a colleague organization of the No More Guantánamos campaign to close Guantánamo Bay Prison. Eight years of scare-mongering are enough. If you think it’s time the U.S. closed Gitmo, Bagram and other secret, offshore prisons, please join NMG. They are asking local groups to "adopt" a detainee and tell his story locally, so U.S. communities will see the men as human beings who deserve fair treatment, rather than faceless, nameless "terrorists."
For example, the Amherst (MA) group passed the nation’s first municipal resolution calling on Congress to lift its ban on allowing cleared detainees to live in the U.S. and welcoming a few detainees when the ban is lifted. Join them as part of an existing or new local group, and use their toolkits, resources, and networking support. Contact Nancy Talanian at info@nogitmos.org
Twitter Campaign to #CloseGitmo!
War Criminals Watch is joining with the ACLU, Amnesty International, many other organizations, artists and musicians like Tom Morello and Trent Reznor to "flood Twitter" and Facebook this Thursday, January 21st with messages to #closegitmo. YOU can help, by spreading the word now, and tweeting messages on Thursday about Guantanamo, torture, habeas corpus rights, and more – using the hashtag #closegitmo.
You can also "donate" your Facebook status for the day with this message. We want to dominate the social networking discussion on Thursday with the message that torture and the prison at Guantanamo still continue, but must be stopped. Follow us on Twitter at worldcantwait or become a fan of World Can’t Wait on Facebook for more details.
Celebrating Roe and Resisting Attacks on Women
This year, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade takes on increased significance. After the murder of Dr. Tiller, the increased violence and threats, Stupak-Pitts and the ensuing, continuing national hysteria against women’s right to birth control and abortion, all in one year… the anti-abortion movement is planning their annual "March for Life" on the Supreme Court.
World Can’t Wait is calling for counter-protest on Jan. 22nd starting at 8am, lasting all day at the Supreme Court. Click here for Facebook invite.
In Wichita, the local chapter of the National Organization for Women has planned a candlelight vigil in honor of Dr. George Tiller – starting at 7pm at the Unitarian Church. Click here for the Facebook invitation.
Saturday, January 23: San Francisco Day of Action for Reproductive Justice v. Right Wing Anti-Abortion Rally. Starting at 10 am, Justin Herman Plaza Music Concourse near Embarcadero BART Station. Sponsored by Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights & World Can’t Wait (415) 864-5153.
In Houston this past Monday (MLK Day), thousands of anti-abortion protesters surrounded a new, as yet un-opened, Planned Parenthood clinic. The clinic will provide desperately needed care to women and teens, including STD and HIV prevention, birth control, and abortion… but the antis’ believe that people should suffer.
Jamilah Hoffman and other University of Houston students organized a pro-choice presence outside in honor of Dr. George Tiller, killed last year. 50 women and men came out in response to quick and reality-based messages on the need to protect women’s lives. Watch the local KIAH coverage.
Last reminder! Take the World Can’t Wait 2010 Survey by January 25 and be part of making plans & messages.
