Press release from:
When: 12:30 PM until mid-afternoon [NOTE NEW TIME], WEDNESDAY, SEP. 9
Anti-torture protesters holding frequent demonstrations at the UC Berkeley campus will appear there again Wednesday, September 9.
This week, this “Information In Action” event at Sproul Plaza will also call for university officials to make formal statements publicly announcing university policy regarding Yoo’s employment at UC Berkeley Law. Protesters anticipate a debate with Dean Edley, who has publicly defended Yoo against university disciplinary action on grounds of what Edley defines as “academic freedom.”
The protesters cite many respected legal and human rights experts around the country who have criticized Edley’s position for its faulty understanding of the law and human rights principles, of the university’s own administrative rules, and of professional ethics.
“We need to speak with Dean Edley,” said World Can’t Wait organizer Stephanie Tang today. “It’s time for an urgent public discussion. A war criminal walks the campus: what course of
responsibility and action is appropriate for the university and its law school? We want to ask Dean Edley about his plans for when and where this public discussion will take place.”
World Can’t Wait and other organizations have vowed to step up public protest and political action, and began doing so on Yoo’s first day back in the classroom on August 17. Four protesters were arrested and banned from the UC Berkeley campus for seven (7) days that afternoon, including Tang. CNN coverage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hX5OUWuClUw
Wednesday’s protest action will begin at 12:30 at Sproul Plaza, and continue at UC Law (Boalt Hall) a short distance up Bancroft Avenue. http://firejohnyoo.org
