A months-long
effort to close a new Marine recruiting office near Berkeley High School
moves to City Hall tonight. Supporters
of the City Council’s January letter that the office “is
not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited
and unwelcome intruders,” have gathered thousands of support messages
for the council members, and tonight will begin a 24 hour support vigil.
“Everyone who supports
the Berkeley City Council’s courageous stand against this immoral, illegitimate
war and occupation of Iraq
must make our support public, loud, and real.
The whole country is watching. We
are the majority, in Berkeley,
in this country, and in the world,” said Giovanni Jackson, youth organizer for the
Bay Area chapter of The World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime.
Pro-war
U.S. Senators, led by Senator
Jim DeMint, and California Republican politicians are threatening to take federal
and state education and transportation money away from Berkeley. Pro-war protesters are criticizing
the council’s stand against the war, planning a 5:00 am Tuesday picket at
City Hall.
Jackson said that World Can’t Wait will
continue to join with Code Pink for Peace and anti-war groups to protest the
recruiting station, located hear Berkeley
High School. On Friday, February 15, as part of a national
Iraq Moratorium, The World Can’t Wait and other groups will be at the Shattuck Avenue recruiting
center all day.
“We
do not support a military that is engaging in war crimes and crimes against
humanity. When U.S. soldiers
sign up for the military, they give up all their rights. They can be executed for disobeying orders. Think about what they are being ordered to
do. We are learning more every day about
the U.S. military carrying
out orders to torture at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. But the great majority of people in the United States
are against torture, against this war, and the Bush administration launching
this war based on lies.”
