A
TRUE MEMORIAL
Deanna Gorzynski 5/26/07
Dick “The Demon” Cheney attended the Commencement Exercises
at West Point Saturday May 26, 2007. World Can’t Wait-Drive
Out The Bush Regime and many Impeachment and Peace Groups, Military
Families Speak Out, Vietnam Veterans Against The War, parents having born the highest cost of war, the loss of
their son and many others joined in a demonstration against the war and for the
impeachment of Dick Cheney. We gathered at Veterans Park in beautiful Highlands Falls, NY , home to West Point Military Academy, then marched to West Point and re-convened at Veterans Park.
Passions ran high. No doubt even higher since the WHOLE
government betrayed us with the Iraq Funding Bill. The Walkabout Clearwater
Chorus, founded by Pete Seeger in 1984 had a sing-a-long, using timeless songs
of peace. More music was provided by Revenge of the Atom Spies, with work from
their latest cd, THE FLAMES OF DISCONTENT.
All the speakers were profound and moving. Debra Sweet national Director of The World Can’t Wait-Drive Out The Bush Regime spoke concisely, succintly and was one of the most polpular of what were many speaker. Veterans,
bereaved parents, and others spoke courage to us and reminded all to “Hold their feet to the fire” and not allow “The movement” to tire out when we are so clearly needed. Colonel Ann Wright spoke of her years of fine service and the disdain she has for the present policies of our nation.
Each had there own story to tell, their
perspective to share, and moving tributes to lost family and friends from war.
The day turned particularly Iinteresting when a small group of Pro-War
Pro Busher’s tried with microphones and insults to drown out the voices that
spoke truth to power. One woman protestor from “Our Camp” was actually
assaulted by one of the Scripture Quoting counter demonstrators. A small woman,
Kathy Devlin was simply walking by when someone punched her in the kidney area
as police would not allow her husband or son to come to her defense. These
deviates topped it off with an obscenity directed to her that I will not repeat
because of its repulsive nature. Kathy wrote me, “I
have been going to protests my whole life and never saw a more vicious bunch of animals then those counter protesters today.”
Guess they REALLY are Pro-War. Of course, Kathy was an easy
target.
These obnoxious counter protestors with no respect DID ask 2 questions I’d like all of us to consider. “What will you do now that the Democrats have failed you?” and equally painful for me,“If so many people agree with you where are the kids? I don’t see any campuses getting shut down!!! You’re just a #$%@!! bunch of %$&**#!”
Each of us must grapple and hope to find answers to these foul mouthed questions.
Many of the speakers congratulated the Graduates, despite
knowing this is an illegal and immoral war. They know that some of these men
and women agree with the war and some do not. Either way their future service
was acknowledged and we were reminded of the sin of sending our “best and
brightest” to give their lives for lies and being forced to take the lives of
Iraqi’s caught in our empire.
We MUST remember the service people who have served the United States
admirably through the decades. Thank You All!
We must also be sure to do all in our power to be certain no
more lives are handed to an Administration so unworthy of their service.
