From a World Can’t Wait organizer in Tennessee:
I was just calling my Senator, Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee, to tell his secretary that I do not agree with the fact the Senator voted for the Military Commissions Act, or “torture bill”. What he replied to me is frightening and shocking. He told me “[Sen. Frist] would rather see the Constitution lit on fire than endanger the lives of the American people” and that the Constitution is here to protect the rights of Americans, not foreign people.
When I asked him if it is okay to torture someone if they
aren’t from the U.S. his reply was “we have to do what we have to do to
keep the American people safe, and the Senator agrees with the way the
bill was worded.” Then I replied “I read the bill, and I don’t agree
with the use of simulated drowning, temporary disablement, or water
torture no matter how it’s worded.”
Then I asked if I could quote
him, and he quickly snapped “no”. Then he changed his mind really fast
and said he would need to know who I’m with to quote him. I told him I
am with the World Can’t Wait, he stuttered an “okay”, and I hung up.
PLEASE
CALL HIM! I’ve had 7 people call already, and his secretary is
becoming nicer and nicer as each call comes in. He is also being
careful about what he says now. Please call and tell him you are with
the World Can’t Wait! The number is 202-224-3344. PLEASE CALL!
