THE RALLY WILL BEGIN AT NOON AT GRANT PARK AS PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED. BOTH THE RALLY AND THE MARCH ARE PERMITTED. ANY INFORMATION TO THE CONTRARY REGARDING STARTING TIME OR PERMIT STATUS IS FALSE.
World Can’t Wait – Chicago sent the following update on its efforts to get permits for activities planned for October 5th. Organizers have permits for both the march and rally, but the city is trying to impose restrictions that would seriously limit the impact of the day’s events.
10/3/06 update:
We didn’t get the decision we wanted out of our administrative hearing so we’re going to Federal District Court Wednesday morning asking for an injunction against the City to stop them from enforcing the march route they offered. We feel strongly that it does not comply with the City’s own ordinance (because it does not afford us ample avenue of expression) and it is impracticable because we are ordered to stop at Federal Plaza two hours before our permit begins, in the middle of an arts & crafts fair. We are committed to achieving a workable compromise, as we did with the City’s own representatives before Friday’s hearing, until it was nixed by a call “downtown.”
We will continue to work to secure the best possible route that is legally permitted. Please continue to call the Mayor’s Office (phone 744-3300 or fax 312-744-8045) and your alderman to let the Mayor know you want the City to negotiate a permit with the public visibility the City’s ordinance and this moment in history require. And urge others to do the same. Check back here at our local website for updates!
