Oct. 6: What
will the day after be like?
What if
students – and teachers and professors – return to their campuses and school,
energized to make the atmosphere vibrate
with the question of what is really happening with this society
and in the world–and what it means to act to really change it?
What if
religious people from every denomination insisted that their congregation must
go on record against the torture, the secret detention and “extraordinary
rendition”, and insisted that Bush Step Down?
What if dockworkers
fought to put their unions on record as refusing to ship war material for Bush’s
illegal, unjust wars?
What if
lawyers and law students came together to denounce and sound the alarm to the
public about the fascistic measures overturning decades and centuries of law
being enacted by the Bush regime?
What if
local and municipal governments across the country went on record demanding an
end to the illegal wars, the torture, and the indefinite detentions the Bush
regime is orchestrating?
What if
contingents of unionized workers demanded that their union pass a resolution
calling for Bush to step down?
What if
in workplaces, parties, barbecues,
barbershops and every kind of gathering people debated the legitimacy of
this regime, and how to extend and develop a political movement that compels it
to step down?
What if
the turbulent political atmosphere influenced youth in the military to refuse
to commit atrocities, and speak out against those who order them to do so?
What if a dynamic
begins in which throughout society people find the ways to confront and oppose
the entire direction Bush et. al. are driving this society and the world – and
those in power find themselves increasingly on the political defensive? What if
– through the creative energies and actions of the people and in a situation of
increasing isolation of the U.
S. internationally -major forces in the
power structure in this country come to the conclusion that Bush, Cheney, and
the rest of them are becoming a liability, and they have to go from office before
things fall further apart?
What will
October 6th look like?
The future is
unwritten. Which one we get is up to us.
