With the USA Today ad, we discovered that a lot of people
who live in areas that the Bush regime would like to think are in their back
pockets are actually not. Here is more
evidence of that from a World Can’t Wait organizer in Washington state:
I live on the Key
Peninsula in WA state.
This area is mostly republican/conservative, so imagine my surprise when my
friend called me to say there were about 50 people in the center of a tiny town
called Key Center
holding up signs against the war in Iraq that said “Not in our
Name” and other anti-Bush slogans. This was on a Saturday afternoon (9/23/06).
Well, needless to say, I jumped into my car and raced down there to hand out information
for World Can’t Wait, and I got quite a few contacts. These people had formed a
group on their own.
They call themselves “Key Peacemakers”. These
people, fed up with the direction of this country under the Bush
administration, gathered the courage to stand up in their own little town and
wave signs and banners protesting the current policies of this corrupt
administration!! What Courage!!! Not only that, but other people, strangers
passing by, stopped, got out of their cars and JOINED THEM!!! If this can
happen in Key Center WA, it gives great hope for the people who
need to raise their voice against this administration on October 5, 2006!! We need
to get out there and find them and give them their chance. For those we miss –
may they hear our voices out on the streets and have the courage, like these
folks in Key Center WA, to come out and let their voices be
heard with us!!!!
As people drove by the group most of the feedback was
positive. I would say there was about 70% reaction in the form of
honking/waving etc and of that only 1 in 10 were negative reactions.
This is surprising because my experience of this area is
that people are very pro-Bush. We have many military bases in the Puget Sound region and people believe that supporting
Bush means supporting the troops.
Not just surprising, this is significant. Significant
because people here are not usually out-spoken about being anti-Bush, yet here
they were on Saturday, standing up for what is right. What a breath of fresh
air!
This is good news in a time when we hear of new atrocities
everyday committed by the Bush administration.
People want to demonstrate against this administration and
World Can’t Wait is giving them a voice to do so.
