A priest arrested in one of Tuesday’s anti-Bush protests says he was simply doing his job.
Father Luis Barrios was arrested and charged with assault,
resisting arrest and disorderly conduct after trying to storm a
barricade outside the United Nations headquarters in Midtown.
Barrios was part of the World Can’t Wait group, which opposes the war in Iraq and calls for an end to the Bush administration.
Despite facing up to seven years in prison, Father Barrios said it’s part of his ministry to take his beliefs to the street.
“I’m doing what I’m supposed to do in reference to my ministry and
my relationship with God,” said Barrios. “We need to be in the streets.
This is a moment to be with justice. So it’s not inside for a war that
we are isolated from the community. It’s necessary to be in the
streets.”
Police say 15 people were arrested at the protest.
Father Barrios is due in court in January.
