A full-page ad
featuring a globe on fire appears today in USA Today signed by prominent public
figures and calling for nationwide protests on October 5 to “drive out the
Bush regime.”
The ad is published by the national organization World Can’t Wait
– Drive Out the Bush Regime. It reads in part: ‘ENDLESS WARS. TORTURE. KATRINA.
THEOCRACY. BRING THIS TO A HALT”No work. No school. March with us. OCTOBER 5! ”
“
“This USA
Today ad, and the story of how it came to be, indicates the early rumblings of
a movement that could very quickly change the political terrain in this
country. The nearly $100,000 needed to publish the ad was raised in 3 DAYS,
through phone calls and emails. This is an unprecedented response from
thousands of individuals who were contributing not to a candidate or
party–they were sending money to get to the heartland of America that we
can’t wait for 2008. This administration
is so dangerous to the interests of the great majority of people in this
country that they must be driven out. We
must take to the streets to make that demand,” said Debra Sweet, national
coordinator of World Can’t Wait.
People donating to the ad told WCW organizers they were
acting now because they believe their government is radically remaking the U.S.
in fascist direction, because they cannot stand by while Bush declares
water-boarding an instrument of official foreign policy, because they cannot
allow endless war to be waged in their name against the people of Iraq and the
rest of the Middle East and beyond, because they cannot tolerate a regime that
rejects basic science, putting the very survival of the planet at risk.
Sweet: “The commitment to run this ad by thousands of
ordinary people is an expression of their determination to leave work and
school to march in the streets on October 5.”
