When asked about Colin Powell’s criticisms of the proposed military tribunals at a press conference today, Bush declared:
It’s unacceptable to think
there’s any kind of comparison between the behavior of the United
States of America and the action of Islamic extremists, who kill
innocent women and children to achieve an objective.
So then what exactly would you call this?:
![]() Ishaqi, March 15, 2006: 11 Iraqis, including 5 children and a 75-year-old grandmother murdered by the US military. |
Haditha, Nov. 19, 2005: 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians murdered by US Marines. |
How is what the Bush regime doing in Iraq anything but “kill[ing]
innocent women and children to achieve an objective.”? And how will dropping a nuclear bomb on Iran, as Bush still holds out the possibility of doing, be anything other than a massacre of innocent people to acheive a political objective?
At the same press conference, Bush got visibly upset at reporters for daring to ask questions about torture and the military tribunals. He went on a tirade about how the terrorists “are coming again”, attempting to whip up fear to justify his regime’s actions. According to Bush, we are supposed to blindly go along with every war crime committed in the name of “defeating the terrorists”.
But the only conclusion that can be drawn from the pictures above is to refuse to accept the choices Bush lays out for us. Instead, on October 5th, through massive protest in the streets, we must send a message that people around the world can hear:
