Your government is openly torturing people, and justifying it.
The ACLU obtained government documents today revealing that torture at Abu Ghraib was directly ordered by Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, and top government officials knew about torture going on at numerous US detention centers in Iraq and Afghanistan well before the Abu Ghraib pictures were released to the public. Lt. Gen. Sanchez wrote a 35-page document ordering interrogators to “go to the outer limits” with detainees. When the Abu Ghraib pictures made headlines around the world, 62 cases of detainee abuse were already being investigated, including 26 which involved
detainee deaths, with some case having already gone through court-martial hearings. And these cases were not limited to Abu Ghraib, but involved detention centers all over Iraq and in Afghanistan.
These government documents, obtained in a Freedom of Information lawsuit by the ACLU, reveal that torture is systematic policy ordered at the highest levels of government. As Raw Story reported, what the government knew about included “assaults, punching, kicking and beatings, mock
executions, sexual assault of a female detainee, threatening to kill an
Iraqi child to ‘send a message to other Iraqis’, stripping detainees,
beating them and shocking them with a blasting device, throwing rocks
at handcuffed Iraqi children, choking detainees with knots of their
scarves and interrogations at gunpoint”.
Will you allow this to continue being done by your government in your name? Or will you resist?
