It
all started when Bush was put (not necessarily elected) in 2000. I knew
then that he and his administration (I call it a regime) were not going to
be good for this country. Then 9/11 happened. Everything I feared would
happen, started to happen. The passing of the patriot act (fascist act).
Thousands of Muslim-americans and immigrants put into detention centers
without charges or due process. Held for months, even years. Their
families not even knowing where they are. Then I started hearing about
dissenters being arrested just for wearing anti-Bush t’shirts.
2003, they tell us that Iraq has WMDs and is connected to 9/11…Huge
lie! By this time, I’m already outraged. Not only did people in this
country start huge demonstrations pleading our government not to go to
war, so were the rest of the world. Did they listen? No! And they
haven’t listened since.
A
ray of hope came in 2004, called Air America Radio. The truth starts to
come out about the war… which I knew from the beginning. We start
hearing about torture. Government corruption it turns out is rampant
among the republican party. Most americans are opposed to the war. Yet
the corporate media still spins things to confuse people. The Bush
Regime constantly continues to run on fear and supposed “moral values”
when in reality, they are the ones who have no morals.
Then katrina happened. I watched helplessly as people were stranded for
days with no help…Begging for relief. Thousands died. The media for
once did its job…but then, the spin of the “blame game”. It wasn’t as
much a racial issue (some may disagree) as it was a poverty issue. If you
were fairly well off you either were able to get out before the storm.
If not, you were probably rescued first. I sat and cried and thought (as
I have often these days), “What happened to the compassion for your
fellow man?” It became abundantly clear to me that our government does
not care one bit about the american people, unless you are extremely
rich and are right wing republican.
Now We know that the Bush/Cheney regime has been breaking the
law, yet, they are still in the white house getting away with
murder (literally). Everytime, we hear some truth about what is going
on,it gets spun and forgotten. Who knows what the whole truth is? I
believe that the truth is much, much worse than we could ever imagine.
When alito got confirmed and Coretta Scott King died. I wrote a poem in
response called “America is Dying”. The American Dream has become a
nightmare. We are headed down a dangerous road. The regime needs to be
stopped before it is too late.
Now, I am just an ordinary homemaker and the mother of a 5 yr old son. I
have recently decided that I will not stand by and watch the country, I
know and love, go down in fascist flames! There is a movement called the
World Can’t Wait. This is a movement dedicated to demanding that the
Bush/Cheney Regime step down and take their program with them. I
decided as one person to start a St Paul Chapter. There are times where
I think, ‘what am I crazy? Can I really do this? Should I
do this?’…Then I think of my son and the kind of future I want him to
have. What kind of example do I want to be for my son? I want him to
know that no matter what happens, mommy did fight for what she felt was
right. People need to stop being afraid and start standing up. The
people still in denial need to wake up and realize that their rights
are in extreme danger. The regime is plotting their attack for the next
elections and are already spinning the propaganda. They are again going
to use the gay marriage issue to get people to vote against their own
interests. They are going to use hate, fear, and “if you are against the
war you are unpatriotic”. If their strategy works this election,I fear
that America will no longer be ours. Remember, it’s WE THE
PEOPLE, not, ME, George Bush.
Anyway, that’s my story. I’m sending a copy of my poem and the call from The World Can’t Wait.
