“Your government suppresses the science that
doesn’t fit its religious, political and economic agenda, forcing
present and future generations to pay a terrible price.”
At the annual meeting of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science, a mainstream scientists’ organization,
participants expressed grave concern about the Bush regime’s systematic
distortions and attacks on science.
David Baltimore, the Nobel Prize-winning biologist and president of
the California Institute of Technology, said, “It’s no accident that we
are seeing such an extensive suppression of
scientific freedom. It’s part of the theory of government
now, and it’s a theory we need to vociferously oppose.”
One speaker, Susan F. Wood, former director of the office of women’s
health at the Food and Drug Administration, resigned in protest when
the FDA refused to allow Plan B, an emergency contraceptive, to be made
available over the counter despite (and distorting) the recommendations
of scientific experts.
When scientists across different fields and from different political
perspectives express this much concern over government suppression of
science, this should serve as a wake-up call to anyone who thinks this
regime will leave anything untouched in its fascist remaking of society.
