The corner chosen catches downtown traffic, and is at the edge of SJ State, so we had a big impact. We did a countdown to 6:00 PM, and then there was a whole bunch of drumming, whistles, shouting, etc. It was quite effective, and we got lots of honks from cars passing by.
At the peak, I counted around 100 people.
There was an open mike about midway through (6:30 or so) and several heartfelt extemporaneous speeches, which went into a whole raft of ‘complaints’ about Bush. None of the speeches pulled any punches, the universal sentiment is Bush is a criminal, that the government is on a dangerous trajectory, that more people need to speak out, etc.
Several SJSU students spoke, and a lot of the theme was that they were calling on other young people to step forward because this is a historic moment.
The crowd was pretty diverse, age wise and ethnically.
We formally broke up at 7:00, but there was a lot of informal soft drumming and poetry reading that was still going on when I left at 7:30.
We hope to form a SJU Chapter, if anyone is interested in assisting, please contact johnreauelle@yahoo.com or sf@worldcantwait.org
