Despite his refusal to provide real answers, and the Democrats’
frequent refusal to demand them, Alito’s record makes clear his
intentions.
Throughout the hearings, Alito has avoided stating clearly his views
and judicial intentions on abortion, executive authority, and voting
rights. That’s because his views are quite clearly fascist. He thinks “the Constitution does not
protect a right to an abortion,”
was part of a Princeton Alumni group espousing racist and anti-gay views, and
has ruled in favor of the extension of unchecked presidential powers.
Alito’s lies, like claiming he will keep an open mind on abortion, are a
not-so-slick cover to stack the Supreme Court with fascists. And as all
this is challenged only in the most flabby way by the Democrats, the
much hyped battle in Congress over the Supreme Court looks more like
surrender.
As the swing vote on the Supreme Court is being decided, the
pendulum is not going to swing back to protect us from those who, as
Catherine Crier puts it, “would like to see the United States under
biblical law.” As Crier describes in Contempt: How the Right is Wronging American Justice,
the Far Right has a whole worked out strategy to pack the courts with
its judges, rewrite the law in to impose their program on all of
society, and pretend to be the victim the whole time. And this has the
power of a well-funded Christian fundamentalist movement with the
support of Bush and much of Congress.
Half-hearted opposition
from the Democrats is not going to stop this onslaught. It will take
millions of people taking independent political action, drawing clear
lines of demarcation, to stop this. Alito needs to be
unequivocally called out for who he is and stopped. And the whole
program he is part of must be reversed.
The World Can’t Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime!
