An Open Letter to Our Friends in the Women’s Movement:

Posted on January 9, 2006
Share:

Today at 9:00AM Concerned Women for America and other
anti-abortion groups rallied at the Supreme Court building in support of the
confirmation of Christian fascist Supreme Court nominee, Samuel Alito.  A handful of World Can’t Wait activists
rallied in opposition chanting, ‘Bush and Alito will outlaw abortion and women
will die! Bush Step Down! Bush Step Down!’ Except for a small group of individuals
with the Feminist Majority Foundation, the women’s movement was pitifully
lacking.  An extremely small group of
activists stood to the side wearing stickers reading, ‘Say No to Alito.’

We with the World Can’t Wait knew that we had
to stand with the majority that we represent both here and around the
world.  We asked these activists to join
us in proclaiming the truth about the horrors that will surely come with the
confirmation of Alito.  One activist told
us, ‘I would lose respect in the eyes of the Feminist Majority Foundation for taking
part in these actions.’  We truly hope
this is not the position of your organization.
Lose respect? For standing up for the lives of women? Would they really
lose the respect of the women’s movement for, as Sunsara Taylor says, ‘putting
their bodies on the line’ for women’s lives? Would we lose respect for the
brave individuals who opposed the lynching of black people during the Civil
Rights era? No! We proudly uphold the feats of such individuals.  Acting in accord with history, World Can’t
Wait activists bum rushed the press conference of these anti-abortion and anti-
women drones and chanted.

We know you have been working
exceptionally hard lobbying Congress as well as attending the Alito
hearings.  We unite with you in opposing
Alito!  Thousands of lives are at stake
as you well know with this confirmation.
When the executive of the nation nominates a Christian fascist to the
Supreme Court, we need to step outside of the usual methods of opposition and take
a stand with the people of not only this country, but also the world.  Alito not only opposes abortion, but also
birth control.  Alito preaches abstinence
only education with no mention of safe sex such as condom use.  This is a man who not only opposes women’s
rights, but also supports unrestricted surveillance such as wire taps.  This is a man who believes warrants hold no
value and it is acceptable for police to kill at their discretion regardless of
whether or not the suspect is armed or even any threat.  This is not only Alito’s agenda.  This is the agenda of the entire Bush
regime.  This is the new normalcy that
they want to force into place.  Actions
of opposition must be commensurate with the times. We must demand ‘Bush Step
Down and Take Your Program with You!’

We do not oppose your method of
lobbying, but there needs to be so much more to change the political situation
in this country to coincide with the true interests of the majority.  When people in this country turn on their
television and read their newspapers and see only an outpouring of
anti-abortion activists and not those who truly support the people, they become
demoralized.  Also, what Democrat or any
other elected official will fight for abortion if they do not see a public
massive movement demanding the ousting of the regime that so strongly opposes
not only abortion but birth control.  The
Call for the World Can’t Wait states, ‘There isn’t going to be some magical
pendulum swing.’  This means we need a
movement of millions actively opposing this regime and gathering more to
join.  Where should we be focusing all of
our energy: fighting small battles one at a time and losing ground to the
entire onslaught or actively moving in leaps?
Please join us not only for the Alito hearings, but also to politically
drown out Bush’s State of the Union address on January 31st and for
a mass day of protest in Washington DC on Saturday, February 4th.  What kind of world do you want for yourself
and the whole of humanity? As the Call for the World Can’t Wait states, ‘The
future is unwritten-which one we get is up to us!’
