Hearings for Alito, handpicked by Bush and Christian fundamentalist leaders, begin today.
Let’s remember how Alito was nominated in the first place.
Originally, Bush nominated Harriet Miers, a loyal member of his regime.
But she just wasn’t fascist enough for the hardcore theocrats, and after
they made a fuss under the guise of “she’s not qualified”, her
nomination was withdrawn. And in came Alito, much to the theocrats’
liking (they even held “Justice Sunday III” yesterday to rally for his
confirmation).
And who is Alito? His words and actions speak for themselves:
“I am particularly proud of my contributions in
recent cases in which the government argued ) that the Constitution does not
protect a right to an abortion.” (1985 application to the Reagan administration).
“In college, I developed a deep interest in constitutional law,
motivated in large part by disagreement with the Warren Court
decisions, particularly in the areas of criminal procedure, the
Establishment Clause, and reapportionment.” This fascist wants to roll back the clock on civil rights and any legal progress in the 1950’s and 60’s.
In Doe v. Groody, Alito upheld the strip search of a 10-year-old girl!
In Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, Alito upheld a law forcing women to notify their husbands before getting an abortion.
And as far as expanding presidential powers for police state purposes, Alito was all for it during the Reagan administration!
As
the Bush regime moves to remake society in a fascist direction, they
are creating a judiciary that will readily go along with their full
program. Alito’s confirmation will be a big step in cementing this “new
normalcy”. This cannot be allowed to go down – this whole direction
must be reversed. No Alito! Bush step down!
