New Year’s Eve in Times Square – Organizing for the SOU Protests

Posted on January 2, 2006

-from an organizer in NYC

Our New Year’s resolution is to drive out this Bush Regime. We saw far
too many crimes in 2005 to wait for any more new years. We are not
shrugging off our responsibilities. Here in NYC we started off the New
Years right. We crashed one of the biggest parties on the planet: Times
Square New Year’s Eve.

We stood in a sea of thousands of people
flooding past us, there were millions all around us, celebrating an end
to this last year and the beginning of something new. And when we
reminded people what this last year has been like, the torture, the
war, the dead, New Orleans, Terri Schivo, Filibusters missing,
Theocrats present, and abortion following close behind the filibusters,
we said that we could not take another 2005, overwhelmingly people
cried out in agreement.

You could hear it in people’s appreciating
for us being out there, see it in the tears they fought back as they
took the flyer, hear it in the ‘damn right’ and ‘Yea, Fuck Bush’. The
slogan BUSH STEP down was something everyone had been waiting to hear!
It was very powerful and deeply resonating.

People stopped and gave money, people
stopped and left their names. We had to tell them what a shame it would
be to meet this movement and not contribute to it. If you meet a group
demanding Bush to step down, even if it is on new year’s eve, it would
be a crime not to join them.

So we asked people to make a resolution with
us, celebrate this new years by saying it will be the Bush Regime’s
last in power. Resolve to get involved. Resolve to join us in demanding
Bush Step Down. Start now by leaving donations we need to keep this
movement going and to reach out to those who have not yet heard it is
out here. We need people to organize and prepare NOW for the state of
the union address, prepare to drown this criminals lies out.

In fact we should have asked people to do
more, people were coming up and joining us without us asking them.
People took stacks, gave money and stopped on the spot to pass out
flyers with us. There was young, old, black, white, drunk, sober, and
everything in between joining us. There was even one young guy from New
Orleans who stayed with us through midnight and rang in the new year’s
with us. People were not upset at us, they did not think we were
ruining their good time, people wanted to know how to get this Bush
Regime out. We could have put a lot more in their hands, and we need to
do better as we move forward.

In polarizing the crowd there were backwards
people, people who supported Bush, people who said they voted for him
and people who were very angry at us. And when they came up to attack
us, to tell us they supported this Nazi president (my words not theirs)
we did not attack them we exposed them. We asked them if they supported
torture, if they supported the war crimes Bush commits in Iraq, the
lies, the theocratic agenda, etc. They mostly walked away. If we did
not have time to engage them we did not let them seize the initiative,
we turned it around. If people came by saying ‘they support him’ we
said hell yea, we support this guy saying bush step down too, we
thanked them for supporting us and asked for a contribution, if they
said ‘yea go Bush’ we said yea that’s the spirit, Go Bush, vamanos,
step down’ if they booed, and said f- you, we said right on say it loud
BOOOO Bush, F-you Bush, Step down.

People stopped, we united with the day’s
spirits, we united with their cheer, and we showed them where things
would go in 2006 unless we became a real variable, demanding Bush step
down. People wanted to know why this is possible. So we talked about
the impeachable offences, the sheer depths of all these crimes, and we
talked about the fact that this is the moment when this emperor has not
clothes that he can be run off, when he looks like the war criminal,
theocrat, and torturer he is. But he needs to be run off, him and his
whole crooked crew. We need a movement of millions, unwilling to beg
and wait for a savior from the democrats or anywhere else, we will do
it. So join us and make this demand ring in the new near.

People were invited to a party one month
from the day they met us too. Right there in Times Square, they were
invited to drown out Bush’s Lies during the state of the union address.
January 31st we told them all to come back and continue kicking off the
new year right. And to join us in taking it right o the steps – Feb.
4th in DC. The World Can’t Wait!
