If a recently passed House bill becomes law, it will be a federal
crime to provide any help to illegal immigrants in any way, including
for mere survival. The border-security bill has the support of
President Bush, and redefines immigrant-smuggling laws in such a way
that anyone who provides any assistance (medical, food, shelter, or
otherwise) to illegal immigrants could face up to 5 years in prison,
and have some of their assets seized. Everyone from Immigrants Rights
groups to the Conference of Catholic Bishops are outraged at the
complete disregard for humanity in this measure that could send
priests, social workers, doctors and nurses to prison for helping
immigrants survive.
Under the Bush regime, the US-Mexico border has become further
militarized; a racist right-wing vigilante group called the Minutemen
begun hunting immigrants with the support of Gov. Schwarzenegger (among
many other politicians), and now this bill would make it a felony to simply be an
illegal immigrant. This in a growing police state where already 23,000
Muslim, Arab, and South Asian immigrants have been rounded up and held
in detention or deported since 9/11, and tens of thousands more have
been forced to register with Homeland Security.
From the murderous war on Iraq, to torture, to leaving thousands to
die in New Orleans, to these inhumane and repressive measures against
immigrants, the Bush regime cares nothing for people’s lives. Can you
accept living in a societylike this?
