Rolling Over Dover- The Sights And Breadth of The Theocrats

Posted on December 26, 2005

by Samantha Goldman

It’s been said before but I’ll say it again, The Bush Regime Is Out To Remake The
World.
Unfortunately, The World
Can’t Wait – Drive Out The Bush Regime is not being alarmist at all. We are
boldly exposing the truth and sharply showing the dangerous theocratic
ideologies and agendas of the Bush regime.
Recently, Pennsylvania made a major break-through in declaring the very
illegitimacy of Intelligent Design.
Dover, Pa delivered with great moral certitude a double smack- down to
Christian fascism.

Parents of students in the Dover school district sued the board for
planning to implement Intelligent Design (I.D.) into the science
curriculum. It was historic in that it directly challenged whether or
not I.D. could be taught alongside evolution in the classroom. As an
aside, it it important when discussing to touch on who the judge
hearing the argument was. As Stanley Rogouski stated very pointedly in
his recent article “Dove PA Judge Rules. It’s Official. Christian Fascists are Liars “, John Jones III was no radical secular guy. In fact, he is a lifelong republican and was appointed by Bush himself.

The board of education approved of
reading a statement that debunked evolution, was confounding, and supported and
hoisted I.D., as well as hyping (a Christian fundamentalist, non-scientific
book) Of Pandas and People.  The
eleven parents that brought this case to court were outraged that creationism
was going to infiltrate its way into the science arena for ninth graders. And
while doing so trample upon the Establishment Clause of the First
Amendment.  The board, continued to
perpetuate lies putting forth that evolution had gaps (duh it’s science, there are no absolutes, it’s not religion) and
that they only wanted to put forth an alternative.

So basically, the school board of
Dover wanted to mislead fourteen year olds by not giving them the truth about
how the world woks. Instead, they planned to disarm them from this knowledge
providing an extremely limited and unscientific outlook on the world.  The Thomas
More Law Center,
well-known Christian fascist non-profit and ringleader in the war on evolution,
represented the school board.

On Dec 22nd
John Jones the III decided in a 139-page verdict that teaching I.D. in schools
was unconstitutional.  He pointed out the
conniving and manipulative measures of the school board as well as the history
of I.D.  Jones stated “The overwhelming evidence at trial
established that ID is a religious view, a mere re-labeling of creationism, and
not a scientific theory’.  But what
really is the significance of this one case in a small town in
Pennsylvania?  In the light of the
horrors of the Bush regime, in particular the attacks on science and growing
strength of Christian fascism, a court ruled essentially and officially that
Intelligent Design is- creationism not science, not even close.

Looking back to the 1987 case, which ruled
that creationism could not be taught in conjunction with evolution because it
was religion, we can see the organized efforts of the I.D. movement. Merely two
years after the case, the creationist textbook Of Pandas and People was
released. If we disentangle for a second, we can start making over arching
associations in the recent I.D. movement and properly identify the stakes, the
urgency and how we have a serious battle ahead of us if we want to lift the
burden of Bush and Co. off the planet.

This victory for evolution is coupled
with the recent attacks on professors who courageously spoke the truth of
evolution, which is the basis of all science and exposed the fallacy of I.D.
Science classrooms have continued to be a battleground between biblical
literalism and scientific truth.  Biology
classes have become undermined by theocrats disguised as I.D. experts. For
example, in Kansas
the school
board accepted new science education standards that include teaching
creationism as a counter-theory to evolution to all students.  In addition, in Alabama anti-evolution
statements
are placed on the
front of textbooks. These instances are not anomalies but budding normality.

Personally, I love biology; I am
obsessed with truth, and begin to salivate out of joy when discussing the
evolution of vertebrates.  Richard
Dawkins, an established biologist,
Oxford professor and author of wonderful books such
as The Ancestors Tale: A Pilgrimage to The Dawn Of Life once said “If
you give the idea that there are two schools of thought within science, one that
says the earth is round and one that says the earth is flat, you are misleading
children.”  On one level it does
come down to the divergence between truth and lies and based upon that, the
very redefinition of science into religion.
On a higher level however, we address the implications and motives in
the creationist movement, that in fact it is not limited to freshman biology,
but a clear plan to bring us into state-of-the-art dark-ages.

As Ardea Skybreak has said in her series
featured in Revolution Newspaper, The
Science of Evolution and The Myth of Creationism
, which is soon to be made
into a book, ‘
Creationists in
the United States today are not just individuals who believe in God and happen
to be misinformed about the facts of evolution. They are an organized,
right-wing, political and ideological movement,
and they have been waging a determined and systematic campaign (in the media,
in the schools, in the courts, throughout society) to try to undermine and
discredit the science of evolution and replace it with their favorite religious
dogma: the theory of divine Creation.’
The I.D. crusade is rooted in a much broader world vision.  One that deems it is time for drastic global
change that relies on implementing a program of biblical pedantry as law. The
agenda of these theocrats is a total rolling back of constitutional rights
(privacy, free speech, separation of church and state, and numerous other civil
liberties) and replacing this with religious mandate.

Christian fascists are no longer a
handful of lunatics but are those in the highest ranks of office all the way up
to George W. Bush.  Bush has stated that
Intelligent Design should be taught in school, and when he was governor in
Texas he said,
“the
jury is still out”, in reference to evolution.  And Pat Robertson, one of Bush’s close
cronies has said ‘I’d like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a
disaster in your area, don’t turn to God. You just rejected him from your
city) God is tolerant and loving, but we can’t keep sticking our finger in his
eye forever. If they have future problems in
Dover, I recommend they call on
Charles Darwin. Maybe he can help them.”

The truth is I.D. is static and
deductive- the word of god. I.D. does not require one to think critically, to
grapple with the complexities of the planet. Instead I.D. purports that there
is no need for answers- the planet was simply designed. This because of its
growing and dangerous influence needs much attention. Instead of being
presented in classrooms as an equally viable alternative to evolution, I.D.
needs to be exposed for what it really is. Not only does it need to be exposed-
it needs to be resisted.

The World Can’t Wait
states very clearly in its call to drive out the bush regime:

‘Your government is
moving each day closer to a theocracy, where a narrow and hateful brand of
Christian fundamentalism will rule.

Your government
suppresses the science that doesn’t fit its religious, political and economic
agenda, forcing present and future generations to pay a terrible price.’

We are being ruled by people who have the
morality of vigilante lynchers.  Bush’s
cohorts believe he is on a mission from God, and he concurs. They plan to
outlaw not only abortion but birth control too.
They want a world where women are reduced to submissive incubators,
where their only place in life is strapped down, pumping out good Christian
babies or scrubbing pots in the sink.
The Christian fascists residing in the White House have an agenda for
implementing theocracy in this country. They have been successful in many ways
and have been met with rather minimal opposition.  They have tightened their ties to religion
through faith-based initiatives and won elections by demonizing gay people and
lessening the value of women. They have army generals that relate the Iraqi
people to Satan.  There is a very
dangerous attitude and sentiment in our society, that provides the material
basis for a look at what the planet will be if we fail to act.  We must realize the seriousness of what we
are up against, a world of Leviticus where slavery exists, where we are in
endless war, gays are stoned and women are property.  If we fail to act commensurately with
organization, righteousness, and love this will be reality.  The horrors of Christian fundamentalism that
we have seen so far are just the beginning.

The question has become what future is a
future worth living, worth fighting for.
The people of the world continue to declare that the future worth
fighting for is not that of George W. Bush and the rest of the Christian
Fascist army.  Right now, this moment, we
have to decide that we have the need to change the trajectory we are heading in
and secondly, that we are capable of doing so.
January is approaching; a month that marks numerous things in the
balance, one of the most prominent issues hanging in the balance is the lives
of women with the Alito hearings, and anniversary of Roe V. Wade. January 31st
is Bush’s State of The Union Address, where we will pour into the streets and
drown out his mendacity.  We have a lot
of work to do; we have to do what many have deemed impossible- drive out one of
the world’s worst oppressors in history.  Right now this is our principal
responsibility, because if we fall short of trying to make history we will
never be forgiven, we will diminish ourselves to the likes of Lyndie
England.
