Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist declared he would stop a
filibuster from preventing Alito being confirmed as Supreme Court
Justice. Alito was nominated after Miers wasn’t openly fascist enough,
and has openly stated his desire to overturn Roe v. Wade in the past
(in a job application, Alito wrote: “The textual, historical and
doctrinal basis of [Roe v. Wade]
is so far flawed that this Court should overrule it and return the law
to the condition in which it was before that case was decided”).
While women’s right to choose and many other life and death issues hang
in the balance, Frist makes it clear that they will not allow any
opposition to their pick for Supreme Court.
And what kind of challenge will there be anyway? Remember the
opposition the Democrats put up this past summer when the right to
filibuster was openly threatened, or their opposition to Roberts as
Cheif Justice? If you can’t remember, it’s because there was none to
speak of. Leading Democrats like Charles Schumer have called Alito
“very, very enjoyable.” And the Democrats continue to cede virtually
all ground on abortion – their best position nowadays is “legal and
rare”, and the “legal” part is rather tenuous.
If their is going to be opposition, it will have to come from
millions of people taking independent political action to change the
whole direction of society.
