“Your government is moving each day closer to a theocracy, where a narrow and hateful brand of Christian fundamentalism will rule.”
This holiday season, theocrats and their far-Right allies are on a
mission to institute Christmas into public institutions and businesses.
The American Family Association boycotting Target for not using the
words “Merry Christmas” in its advertising. The Catholic League is
boycotted Wal-Mart due to how its website searches for
“Christmas.”
Right-wing media has been playing this up, with Fox news anchor John
Gibson claiming Christmas is under attck from “professional atheists”
and “Christian haters.” Bill O’Reilly’s website features a list of
stores to boycott because they use “happy holidays” instead of “merry
Christmas.”
While this might seem like lunatic ravings from right-wing nutcases
(and on one level it is), this has dangerous implications. The fact is,
a whole base of followers is being whipped up to boycott businesses
that use more secular advertising slogans, and to demand that their
fundamentalist Christian ideology be forced on the rest of society.
This is only one more step in the direction of theocracy.
