We expect that readers of this message were already outraged at the U.S./Israeli war on Iran, even before Trump’s threat to openly commit the war crime of destroying civilian infrastructure. Israel is bombing to destroy Lebanon as it did Gaza; the Trump fascist regime is threatening mainstream U.S. — and generally imperialist-supporting — media with loss of broadcast licenses if they cover the war factually. And 2,000 or so U.S. paratroopers are headed somewhere in the Middle East to join the specter of destruction.
Let’s dispense with the idea that the Trump crowd values reality as anything more than the “truth” they can use to bolster “might makes right.” But those non-Trump imperialists also act like history in the Middle East started in 1979 when the Shah was removed by mass protest. But for Iranians, and justice-loving people around the world, the 1953 coup overthrowing the elected Iranian government is a reference to how much American “democracy” values lives there. And for 100 years before that the interest of the “West” in Iran and the Middle East was its oil, not its peoples and cultures.
