Julian Assange and reportage on Guantanamo, also from Andy Worthington: 13 years ago, on April 25, 2011, WikiLeaks and a host of international newspapers — the Daily Telegraph, the Washington Post, McClatchy, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, El Pais, La Repubblica, L’Espresso and Aftonbladet — published, or began publishing, “The Guantánamo Files,” a treasure trove of classified U.S. military documents from the prison at Guantánamo Bay. The last consisted of four significant releases, in 2010-11, of classified material leaked by Chelsea Manning, the first three being the Afghan and Iraq War Logs, as well as a vast archive of diplomatic cables. Julian Assange’s case is at a critical point where he can quite possibly by extradited to the United States by Britain. The British court will hold a hearing on May 20, 2024, to determine whether or not to accept the U.S. assurances of his “safety” here. The Free Assange committee has asked that people call or write their U.S. Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor H. Res. 934 to drop the charges and extradition of Julian Assange.
