8/31/06: Donald Rumsfeld, speaking before an audience of American
Legionnaires on Tuesday, accused people in this country who oppose the endless wars he and others in
the Bush Regime have initiated (and the ones they are planning) of suffering
from “moral and political confusion”. He further said that those against
the Bush administration’s “Iraq
and counterterrorism polices” are “trying to appease a new type of
fascism”.
A more twisted perversion of truth and facts is difficult to
imagine. Rumsfeld and others in the Bush core have been trying to get everyone
in this country to shut up since Ari Fleischer’s infamous threat that “Americans
need to watch what they do and watch what they say”. Now the gang that has
brought the world institutionalized torture at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib,
indefinite detention without trial for any one they declare to be an enemy,
mass killings of civilians, and the promise of extending all this and more to
other countries, is about an inch away from accusing the millions of people in
this country against all this of being treasonous.
Rumsfeld should exercise a bit more caution throwing around the word “fascism”. This word can easily point right back to the Bush regime when you really get some moral and political clarity.
A few things need to be made abundantly clear.
One is that people who stand in firm and unwavering
opposition to mass murder, endless illegitimate wars, detention without the
right to trial or lawyers, torturing and degrading those caught up in the
deadly military sweeps through impoverished and war devastated slums, are in
fact quite clear and correct – morally and otherwise. These atrocities and the
many more the Bush Regime is responsible for are intolerable and unacceptable
to anyone with a heart or a conscience, or the capacity to think independently
of the “mis and dis” information fed to them by Bush, Fox News, and
the entire “spin machine”.
Another is that Rumsfeld, like Bush, Cheney, Rice, and the
rest of the Bush Regime driving their hell bent death machine realize that
millions of people in this country oppose them. And what they fear is that this
opposition will be expressed, powerfully and emphatically.
And still another is that the day for that political
expression to be heard in a way that the whole world will recognize is fast
approaching – and on October 5 our voices and our actions must ring out to all.
As one recent signer of the Call to Drive Out the Bush Regime wrote “history
will not be kind to us if we do not do everything in our power to drive Bush
out of office”.
