LAST CHANCE FOR
WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN MISSISSIPPI
Drive Out the Bush Regime Bus Tour in Jackson July 15-22
Joins Fight to Keep Open Last Abortion Clinic in Mississippi
Reproductive Freedom Rally – 12-2:00pm, July 15, Smith Park, Jackson, MS
The World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime BUS TOUR is
rolling into Jackson, Mississippi from July 15 – 22 to take a stand
against Operation Save America’s (OSA), the extremist organization that is
trying to close the last abortion clinic in the state. World Can’t Wait, along
with National Organization for Women (NOW), will mount counter-protests all
week at the clinic (Jackson’s
Women’s Health Organization, 2903 N. State).
For years, OSA (formerly Operation Rescue) has violently
blockaded abortion clinics and helped make doctors the targets of deadly
attacks. Their t-shirts state their politics: “Homosexuality is a
sin. Islam is a lie. Abortion is
murder.” OSA boasts that “what is
won in the streets [July 15 – 22] will become the law of the land.”
“OSA’s attack on this last clinic in Mississippi
takes place in a moment when the Bush regime is trying to remake of America in
fascist direction”, says Sunsara Taylor from World Can’t Wait. “Nobody will
stop these fanatics but us, the people, and the clock is ticking.”
Taylor: “If people respond decisively, this week could be a
rallying point to push back this assault on abortion, and unleash a movement of
millions against the whole Bush program of repression, war for empire and
theocracy–a movement capable of driving out the regime, which is what it will
take to stop any of these attacks. But let’s be honest. Any effective
response hinges on abandoning the strategy of the Democratic Party to run its
own anti-abortion candidates, as they are doing by running Bob Casey Jr. in the
Senate race in Pennsylvania. We need an independent movement expressing
the sentiments of the majority.”
States all over the country are rapidly moving to enact laws
banning abortion – South Dakota, Louisiana and Ohio,
despite the majority of the country still favoring the right of women to end
unplanned pregnancies.
Jackson is the second stop on the Drive Out the Bush Regime
National Bus Tour which is making stops throughout the “red states” — at
military bases, abortion clinics, “creationist museums” and other hot
spots-building up to a DAY OF MASS NATIONAL RESISTANCE ON OCTOBER 5 aimed at
bringing Bush’s outrages to a halt.
