The Greensboro NC Chapter of World Can’t Wait mounted a highly successful resistance to the lies put for by the Bush Regime on Jan. 31, 2006. Our evening began at a local arts movie venue called The Scene, with a high school band playing some rock and roll and blues favorites. This was followed by local speakers such as; Two High School Students, The President of the Greensboro Pulpit Forum which is an African American Ministerial Alliance of more than 90 members, Two Palestinian college students, a Peace Candidate for Congress, and other activists including a police brutality activist, who took the floor and inspired the crowd.
As 9:00 approached, the room, with a capacity of 60 comfortably seated became Standing Room only, with newcomers spilling outside onto the sidewalk. As a final inspiration, the movie was played about November 2nd, and this got the crowd ready to march. As a precaution, the police forewarned us to ‘stay on the sidewalks’. This did not happen as our crowd of nearly 200 when leaving The Scene spilled out onto Elm Street, the main Street in downtown Greensboro. The crowd took over the streets of downtown, eventually passing by the famous Woolworth’s Lunch Counter – where a stand was also taken for the cause of true freedom decades ago.
The drums, pots, pans, kazoos, tambourines, and other noisemakers created a cacophony of noise, which attracted new people to the march. The crowd picked up people along the way and was estimated by several organizers as being at 250 – 300 strong when they returned to The Scene to conclude the March.
Back at The Scene, eight marchers were arrested and two were maced, by the police as a result of marchers catching, what turned out to be an undercover cop, filming all the car license plates parked near the Scene. The plainclothes cop was confronted and when he refused to identify himself, several people stood in front of the license plates, blocking his view. This went on for several minutes and finally the police spy elbowed and shoved a marcher who was standing in his way.
He still hadn’t identified himself. More shoving ensued and then the guy drew his gun. He still hadn’t identified himself but the marchers had figured out that he was either a cop or some paramilitary nutcase. They ran. Many police moved in, one marcher was tackled and beaten and others were rounded up and arrested. One of protestors maced was a local high school girl who had to be transported to the local hospital.
There were some very tense moments with the police for duration of perhaps 20 minutes following the march. Once this was calmed down, the remaining folks returned to The Scene for a rap session and open mike.
Two were charged with disturbing the peace and released O.R. Four were charged with assaulting a police officer and posted $500.00 bond through a bondsman. Two were charged with assault and carrying a concealed weapon (one pocket knife and another, a baton). Bond was $1000.00 each. WCW will release a statement today about the March and arrests. The evening concluded by 11:00 pm, and was hugely successful and peaceful as well as noisy. We succeeded in drowning out Bush’s lies. On to DC this weekend!!!
The event was covered by WXII-TV (NBC), WFMY-TV (CBS), WFDD-FM (NPR), The Greensboro News and Record Newspaper, The Carolina Peacemaker Newspaper, The UNC-G Carolinian, and the Randolph Community College Journalism class.
