The Bergen County NJ Chapter of World Can’t Wait organized a highly successful resistance to Bush’s lies during the State of the Union Address. A very diverse group of people gathered with us at the corner of Van Neste Square and E. Ridgewood Ave in Ridgewood, NJ. Many of the participants were from other towns within Bergen County and some of the neighboring areas. Even kids as young as 12 years old joined in the chanting and protesting. There was a heavy police presence for a rally of about 60 people, but no arrests were made.
All evening, starting at 8 and not ending until 9:30, people made noise using drums, pots, pans, whistles, empty buckets, their voice and other noisemakers. As people drove by they would honk and wave in support of our drown out. The rally attracted attention from everyone in the area. Many people were surprised that such a successful anti-Bush rally could happen in a conservative town like Ridgewood.
The event was organized primarily by local High School students.
