Yesterday morning, amidst the recent developments (such as
the spying exposed, and the confirmation of Alito in the balance) and exactly 4
days prior to his state of the union address, Bush delivered a press
conference. Cocky and nervous, the
president put forth the message that he is on the offensive, ready to rumble
with his state of the union address. In
his press conference he laid out the skeleton for the content of next Tuesday’s
speech. Bush spoke to the responsibility
to lead and promote freedom, which translates to the obligation to wage immoral
and unjust wars and wrap whole towns in barbed wire. He emphasized the necessity of putting in
place policies that allow us to be economic leaders – meaning that wars for
empire, spying, lying, and domestic repression for the sole purpose of
financial dominance is right. In a
segment of the press conference, Bush fleshed out his plans for hunting down
people and detaining them in the dead of the night; a mission of torture. Within all this he adamantly defended the
illegal and systematic spying and the extension of the patriot act.
Bush was on
to something yesterday. Bush is fully
aware of the mood shift in society, he does read the popularity polls, as he
said, ‘We live in a momentous time) we
are living in historic times and that we have a chance to make decisions today
that will help shape the direction of events for years to come.’ Bush is absolutely right. We are
at a critical juncture. What he plans to
lock in place – such as a transformed supreme court which allows unrestrained
executive authority, outlaws abortion, supports domestic repression, and all-together
hoists Christian fascism – will be almost impossible to overcome. In fact, to flesh it out further, besides his
lies on the positive development of the economy (while unemployment rates soar),
despite his lies about Iraq and the ‘liberating effect we have had on that
nation’, besides his defense and cry for support around the NSA spying, Bush
will also, most likely, give his victory speech on the confirmation of
Alito. We either make the decision today
to join this movement to drive out this criminal regime that is taking us on a
trajectory of normalizing boiling people to death (see bushcommission.org),
spying on ordinary citizens and implementing a fundamentalist Christian police
state, or we are condoning it. The
choice is ours.
