“People look at all this and
think of Hitler – and they are right to do so. The Bush regime is
setting out to radically remake society very quickly, in a fascist way,
and for generations to come. We must act now; the future is in the
balance.”
Yesterday, President Bush spoke at a gathering at the headquarters of
the secretive National Security Agency about the necessity of illegal
wiretaps and other forms of monitoring of US citizens for the security
of the nation. Bush is attempting to recast the debate about his
breaking of the law with relation to ordering illegal wiretaps and put
it into the framework of “protecting the country from terrorists.” The
President has ordered these illegal wiretaps over thirty times during
his time in office. Now, after public pressure has mounted through
lawsuits from organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union,
Bush is forced to go to the agencies themselves to drum up support for
his illegal domestic spying plans.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) posed the
question like this: “It really is a legal question about … whether
Congress can limit the president’s authority under the Constitution,
which I’m of the view it cannot.” Basically, no one should be able to
limit the powers of the President to do whatever he pleases, and
legality should not be an issue. One can hear echoes of Hitler and the
Nazis in Germany when listening to the Republican leadership justifying
the crimes of their Fuhrer.
There you have it: an Orwellian speech
justifying spying on American citizens under the auspices of fighting
terrorism. Can the world wait until 2008 to see what more Bush has in
store for us, the world, and our future? NO!
The World Can’t Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime!
