The Department of Homeland Security is deporting Haitians seeking to
escape the current violence and turmoil in their country. In callous
disregard for the lives of people facing a dangerous and
life-threatening situation, this regime is refusing to give them
temporary protected status. The State Department considers Haiti unsafe
for Americans, but when it comes to Haitians fleeing from atrocities and
deep poverty, their lives don’t seem to matter. This is all too
reminiscent of New Orleans four and a half months ago. Dozens of
lawyers have filed lawsuits to prevent these life-threatening
deportations, while Homeland Security defends its total lack of concern
for the safety of Haitian people.
Paromita Shah, associate director of the National
Immigration Project in Boston, said: “I don’t think it makes sense for the United States to send people back
to a country where such devastating human rights violations are
occurring. Those Haitian deportees face grave risk
to their lives, and that’s not acceptable.”
