“Your government puts people in jail on the merest suspicion,
refusing them lawyers, and either holding them indefinitely or
deporting them in the dead of night.”
The
New York Times today carried an ominous headline “In Terror Cases,
Administration Sets Own Rules.” The article included a poingent quote
from Eric M. Freedman (a law
professor at Hofstra University who has consulted with lawyers for
several detainees): “The position of the executive branch…is that it
can be judge, jury and executioner.”
The
murky “enemy combatant” category has been used by the Bush regime to
detain people without charges or due process. It has been used
arbitrarily, without public hearings, and puts people at risk for
things like unknowingly teaching english to an al-Qaeda member,
according to Judge Joyce Hens Green of the Federal District Court in
Washington. Unknown numbers of “enemy combatants” have been held since
Sept. 11 without contact with their family and little or no access to
lawyers.
Is this fascist enough for you to resist and mobilize to stop?
Will we allow this regime to have the power to imprison and even
execute anyone it wants to, by its own rules?
The World Can’t Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime!
