Today’s reason to drive out the Bush regime comes from Bush’s
Veteran’s Day speech:
‘While it’s perfectly legitimate to criticize my decision or
the conduct of the war, it is deeply irresponsible to rewrite the history of
how that war began.
Some Democrats and anti-war critics are now claiming we
manipulated the intelligence and misled the American people about why we went
to war.’
News flash, Bush: you blatantly lied before the whole world
about Iraq
having ‘weapons of mass destruction’ in order to justify launching the war on Iraq.
The fact is, this war is based on lies, is completely illegitimate, and has
resulted in the deaths of over 100,000 Iraqis and 2,000 US troops in an unjust
occupation spanning over 2 years.
There are some very dangerous implications this speech. Bush
is arrogantly claiming that to raise criticisms of his reasoning for war is
aiding the ‘enemy,’ and is beyond the pale of reasonable criticism. This is not
too far off from the far-right pundits like Ann Coulter who refer to centrist
Democrats (who voted for the war) as traitors.
One of the ways the Nazis came to power was to attack the Weimar
Republic (the German government
before the Nazis’ rise to power) for being weak and indecisive, and unable to
protect German ‘national interest.’ And the Nazis replaced this with a
worldwide power grab, invading and occupying other countries and subjecting the
peoples it conquered to atrocities.
Not only is the parallel to this striking; what’s also
sobering is that in the face of protest, as well as some public criticism from within
the government over the war on Iraq,
Bush is lashing out to arrogantly defend the war and attack those who question
it. His whole speech on Veteran’s Day was an attempt to defend the so-called ‘war
on terrorism’ with outrageous lies, claims of ‘liberation’ of Iraq,
and threats towards other countries such as Syria.
It was an open claim for the right of the Bush regime to continue its
occupation of Iraq
and further its imperial ambitions around the world. All this shows that this
regime will not go without a huge fight, and it is up to us to stop them.
The World Can’t Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime!
