We learned this week that President Biden approved in March a highly classified nuclear strategic plan for the United States that, for the first time, reorients the U.S deterrent strategy to focus on China’s rapid expansion in its nuclear arsenal. As we noted last week, the U.S. and most other members of the UN Security Council have never agreed to no first use of nuclear weapons. In early August, Zelensky reported that Ukraine has deployed U.S. F-16 fighter jets against Russia. When that plan was announced earlier in 2024, Putin said, “F-16s are capable of carrying nuclear weapons, and we will also need to take that into account while organizing our combat operations.” The nuclear-powered governments, and especially the U.S. with by far the most powerful military ever, risk a catastrophe. Whether a nuclear exchange would be intentional or unintentional or accidental, it’s the system of capitalism/imperialism which sets up the conflict and provides the impetus for disaster.
