We recall the event World Can’t Wait sponsored in 2006 when Lancet published its October report of an estimated 654,965 excess deaths related to the U.S. war on Iraq, or 2.5% of the Iraqi population, through the end of June 2006.
Lancet has just published a new report of the deaths in Gaza ― see this small section below.
In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths. Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death9 to the 37 396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2 375 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip.
The full report is accessible here and is important reading.
Ralph Nader has been following the death tolls for months and has been saying the actual counts must be way higher than the official totals. He is now estimating an even higher count than that suggested by Lancet.
And, we look back to an article published in Jewish Currents in January 2024 on “The Epidemiological War on Gaza” explaining how disease is poised to become an even deadlier second front in Israel’s genocidal assault on the besieged Strip.
