Honestly, our message is late this year because… how does one start? World Can’t Wait runs on the commitment that “Humanity and the Planet Come First.” As do you, we acutely feel the challenge to stop the current unnecessary suffering of humanity and we see that the danger to our planet is truly existential, requiring urgent action.
The violence of Israel’s response to the Hamas attack on October 7 is leading to the genocide of all Palestinians in Gaza and threatening those in the West Bank and Jerusalem. The proxy war over Ukraine between Russia and the U.S. is at a stalemate, with thousands dying for imperial power. The COP 28 meeting, run by oil producers, resolved to maybe, sometime, cut down on fossil fuel use. Disastrous civilian-killing wars continue throughout the world. And, this January 11 will be the outrageous 22nd anniversary of the U.S. torture camp at Guantanamo.
As you know, World Can’t Wait is not a participant in the non-profit industry. Our “tech department” is amazingly skilled though unpaid, as are our core organizers. We don’t receive grants from foundations who then tell us what we can’t do or say. We report to you, our individual donors, the people who support our mission.
World Can’t Wait is concentrating most urgently on reaching students and youth, through our project We Are Not Your Soldiers, with the message that when you sign up for the U.S. military you risk losing your humanity. We have more requests for speakers than ever, and have recruited new speakers to meet that need. We continue, since 2005, to support the demand Close Guantanamo NOW, and have helped lead monthly global vigils with that demand this year.
Your donations — which can be tax-deductible through our fiscal sponsor, Alliance for Global Justice — keep the literal and digital lights on and provide modest stipends to the veteran speakers who Zoom into classrooms, and now, can also visit again in person.
