Last year El-Geneina witnessed unprecedented violent conflict, causing displacement of tens of thousands. Dir of Police: Forces arrived in the state will strike with an iron fist anyone who seeks to destabilize security. US placed Central Reserve Forces on its blacklist due to violations against peaceful protesters; US Treas imposed sanctions due to serious human rights violations. Al Taghyeer
At last, a start to justice for Darfur. Darfur Bar Assoc: The first trial by ICC on massive crimes committed in Darfur is finally underway. Kushayb, well-known Janjaweed leader, will face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. This is a momentous event. It has been almost 20 years since the violence by government forces and militias, 15 years since the Court started issuing warrants. Survivors and victims have never given up the hope of seeing justice. ICC has been the only chance for justice for crimes which killed thousands of civilians and sent millions fleeing from their homes as the government sought to terrorize the region in response to an insurgency. There was an absence of any political will to hold perpetrators to account. Al-Bashir, subject of 2 ICC warrants on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur, blocked Sudan’s cooperation with ICC for more than a decade. Survivors’ hopes increased after al-Bashir was ousted…opened the door to possibility of sending him with 4 other suspects to The Hague. International players including US and EU need to send a far stronger signal to authorities to cooperate with the investigation and prosecution. So much time has passed since the world watched in horror as government and militias carried all-out assault on the people of Darfur, leaving a trail of devastation. But it is never too late for justice. The victims are eagerly waiting. Survivors will never give up hope that al-Bashir and the others will be held to account. Dabanga
