Authorities detained a 14-year-old girl during marches in Omdurman. 200 injured in Break the Chains Marches subjected to excessive violence, heavy firing of ammunition and tear gas. Large crowds demonstrated in Khartoum and other states to demand release of detainees. Forces fired tear gas at hundreds who tried to rally outside the palace where the Sovereign Council is based. The processions were subjected to excessive repression to prevent protesters from reaching the bridge to Khartoum to participate in marches there. Demonstrators demanded overthrow of the regime, full transition to civilian democratic rule. 87 received care in hospitals: 20 hit by tear gas canisters, 12 sustained head injuries, another injured in the eye by shrapnel from a stun grenade, a man was run over by a large police vehicle, injuring his leg, and a child suffered a broken rib. Protesters called on the military to go back to the barracks. In Gadarif they chanted: Civilian is the people’s choice. Demonstrators marched to a government building in Pt Sudan but Security Forces blocked route with tear gas. An economic advisor described the situation as dark and dire, reaching a dead end. The revenue crisis led to decisions to increase fees for medical and gas services, later retracted. Decisions will raise commodity prices and inflame the situation – authorities did not benefit from the lesson of increasing electricity tariffs which caused closure of El Shimal Hwy.
