Pro-Choice Message Will Counter Anti-Abortion Protests
During the Democratic Convention
Abortion Without Apology: Events Saturday August 23
World
Can’t Wait, a national organization based in New York City,
is organizing visitors here to attend and protest the Democratic National
Convention and Denver
residents for a peaceful “pro-choice” presence to counter expected
anti-abortion protests starting Saturday.
Groups
including Operation Rescue and the Christian Defense Coalition, both with a
connection to extreme anti-abortion violence in the last 20 years, are calling
for eight days of protests at abortion facilities and public locations where
the Democratic Party is meeting.
Information on anti-abortion violence is available via the National
Abortion Federation athttp://www.prochoice.org/news/kit/violence.html
Debra
Sweet, Director of World Can’t Wait said, “Anti-abortion groups managed to get an amendment to the
Colorado constitution on the November ballot which would declare – in
contradiction to all known science and logic – that legal “personhood” starts
at conception. The right of a woman to
control her own body, including to use birth control would be gone. We”ve been there before. It was called the “Dark Ages”.”
Pro-choice activists plan
to bring their own messages to counter the large photos of fetuses, and what
they describe as “disinformation” on abortion and birth control usually carried
by anti-abortion protesters. Emma
Kaplan, Seattle,
who is helping to organize the pro-choice message said, “People who see where this is going – to the
outlawing of birth control — need to raise our voices now. The anti-abortion
lies must be countered directly, with substance, courage, and reality. Hoping they will go away or conciliating with
their anti-woman agenda is not working”.
Saturday August 23 schedule form
Christian Defense Coalition: 12:00 noon Civic
Center Park;
1:00 pm Pepsi Center;
6:00 pm Skyline Park.
We expect they will be at the new Planned Parenthood 7155 E. 38th Avenue at 9:00am
Saturday. Updates on that available at
347 385 2195 morning of.
SPEAKER BIOS
Debra Sweet is the Director of World Can’t
Wait. She has organized community
defense of abortion providers, including escorting doctors to work, and helping
clinics recover after bombings and murders of providers. She and Sunsara Taylor
were the only leaders to take a pro-choice message into the crowd in front of
the hospice center where hundreds of anti-abortion activists demanded that the
state of Florida
not allow Terri Shiavo to be allowed to die.
Debra leads a movement which has helped make the Bush regime synonymous
with the terms “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity” while organizing
national street protests, ads in The New York Times and USA Today, and
whose work against US sponsored torture was called the “most valuable crusade”
by The Nation magazine in 2007.
Her latest article on the Denver protests
is “Gitmo on the Platte”(http://www.worldcantwait.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4861&Itemid=265)
Sunsara Taylor is a member of the World Can’t Wait
Advisory Board and a writer for Revolution Newspaper (www.revcom.us). Her recent polemic against The Nation
magazine’s support for Obama (“On The Nation’s Open Letter to Obama: Wishful
Thinking and Deadly Self-Deception” http://revcom.us/a/139/Nation-en.html)
was widely posted on the web. She co-hosts WBAI’s “atheist” radio show, “Equal Time
for Free Thought,” and has appeared on CNN’s Showbiz Tonight, Air America
radio, and many other programs.
Following one of her appearances on The O”Reilly Factor, NewsHounds.us remarked “Taylor, as always, was tough and confident
telling [O”Reilly] all the truths that drive him crazy.” She reported widely on the Battlecry
Christian youth movement, wading into their rallies and studying the Christian
fundamentalist doctrine on the submission of women, and their proscription on
birth control and abortion.
