Today a group World Can’t Wait activists and others gathered
in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York for an emergency
protest of Condoleezza Rice’s visit there. Rice’s appearance was part of the
process of authoring a UN resolution for a “ceasefire” in Israel’s vicious war of aggression on Lebanon – a war
made possible by, and enjoying the approval and direct military support of the
Bush regime.
As Rice’s hypocrisy was on display inside the UN Building,
signs reading, “Condi Rice: War Criminal”, “Drive Out the Bush
Regime www.worldcantwait.org,”
and a big banner announcing the October 5th Day of Mass Resistance,
were on display across the street, accompanied by chants of “Condi Rice is
a liar, the war on Lebanon
is for empire!” Passersby in cars and on foot stopped to check out what
was going on, and a number of them hung around to talk and pick up copies of
the World Can’t Wait Call. A pair of young men walking by joined the protest on
the spot, after one of the World Can’t Wait activists challenged them, saying,
“if you want what Condoleezza Rice and the Bush Regime are doing around
the world to stop, THIS is where you need to be! Join us!”
New York
1, WBAI, Channel 11 (NYC WB affiliate), and the Associated Press covered the
protest. World Can’t Wait spokesperson Sunsara Taylor had this to say: “Condoleezza
Rice and the Bush Regime look out at 1,000 dead Lebanese, one-fourth of their
population displaced, Beirut in rubble and the blood of children flowing in the
street and see the ‘the birthpangs of a new Middle East’. This is a vision of
further U.S. hegemony that
will only bring suffering and more misery to the people in the Middle East, and is deeply opposed by, and against the
interests of the people in this country, too.”
