Lamont’s victory in the Connecticut Democratic Senatorial primary over Lieberman is a further illustration of the ever-widening gap between on the one hand the sentiments and desires of millions to end the war and reverse the whole Bush agenda, and on the other hand the policies and program of the Democratic Party leadership. If these sentiments are to change the direction of society, they must break out of the confines of what is the official political “opposition” today – accommodation and conciliation with each of Bush’s outrages – and be expressed in powerful outpourings of resistance on October 5th across the country.
