Jackson, Mississippi– All week
long, the extremist anti-abortionist Christian group,
Operation Save America (OSA), has been in Jackson
trying to close down the last abortion clinic in the state of Mississippi. The World Can’t Wait – Drive
Out the Bush Regime national bus tour has joined with other pro-choice groups
and individuals this week to defend the clinic and expose the theocratic agenda
of OSA.
On Thursday, July 20, World
Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime ran an ad in the Jackson Clarion-Ledger calling
people together to speak out against “bigotry, intolerance and
theocracy” to stop OSA and bring the dangerous Bush program “to a
halt!” A national day of resistance is called for October 5.
Sunsara Taylor of
World Can’t Wait: “OSA people are lunatics but this organization is not
the fringe. They have friends in very high places in the Bush Regime, and in
the leadership of the religious right. And they are serious – not only about a
complete end to abortion and outlawing birth control. They aim to remake America in a
fascist direction, with a legal system that enforces Biblically-literal law.
This would be a horror for women and all thinking people.”
As if to demonstrate
the disturbing breadth of their theocratic program, on Tuesday as TV news
cameras rolled, Operation Save America ripped up a copy of the Qu’ran, along
with a rainbow gay pride flag. What did this have to do with abortion? Flip
Benham, director of OSA, answered: “We deal with all the issues we
possibly can because there are different manifestations covering the same cyst,
the cyst of the devil.” (Jackson Clarion-Ledger, July 19) On Sunday, OSA surrounded a liberal church
that was holding a meeting with pro-choice people. Their message blares from
their t-shirts: “Homosexuality is a sin. Islam is a lie. Abortion is murder.”
World Can’t Wait
activists are reaching out to people in Jackson.
Taylor: “People are
overwhelmed by this spectacle. We’ve been going door to door everyday to
neighborhoods and businesses. We’ve been well received.” (Jackson
Clarion-Ledger) In the next few
weeks the bus tour will travel to abortion clinics, “creationism
museums”, and military bases in Arkansas,
Indiana, and Ohio– areas where the whole direction of
the country is being contested.
