World Can’t Wait organizers in Evanston
(a suburb of Chicago)
took part in their local July 4th parade. Their decorated truck, banner, and street
theater were a hit and a source of controversy among the crowd.
Several times along the parade route, the people in the World
Can’t Wait contingent would fall to the ground and wrap themselves in white
sheets, depicting the Nov. 19 Haditha massacre in which 24 Iraqi civilians,
including several children, were killed by US troops. The crowd would go silent when the reality of
the Bush regime’s occupation of Iraq
was in front of their eyes.
Some onlookers joined the World Can’t Wait contingent in the
course of the parade, and at times the crowd would chant along “Drive Out the
Bush Regime – The World Can’t Wait!” It
was hard for the organizers to keep up with the demand for flyers and to
sign-up on WCW contact lists coming from the crowd. The overwhelmingly positive reception to the
World Can’t Wait’s message received at a suburban July 4th parade
says much about how much tens of millions of people hate what the Bush regime
is doing and want to find a way to stop it.
