A resolution for Bush’s impeachment in the California legislature is being blocked by guess who? The Democratic Party leadership.
There is growing widespread support for impeachment, with polls showing that a majority of Americans believe Bush should be impeached if he lied in his justifications for the Iraq war (which, of course, he did). The Bush regime has not only blatantly broken the law numerous times, but has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. And the impeachment movement has now gained some support from progressive Democrats in some state legislatures (with resolutions before California, Illinois, and Vermont).
While Democrats control both houses of the California state legislature, the Democratic leadership has been reluctant to pass the resolution and has even prevented it from being sent to committee. Their rationale has been the need not to endanger getting Republican support for budget and tax measures, which is a rather sorry excuse when the future of society and the planet hang in the balance with the Bush regime in power.
Democratic Party leaders also warn that going for impeachment now will hurt their chances of taking back Congress in 2006. But two problems arise with this logic:
1) Time and time again these people have told us to wait for a more opportune moment to oppose the Bush regime, and while they’ve been waiting, the war has continued, torture has become normal, Alito and Roberts have been appointed to the Supreme Court, and abortion has been banned in South Dakota.
2) Those who will be “taking back Congress” in 2006 don’t seem at all interested in opposing the Bush regime. As Nancy Pelosi, who would likely become House Majority leader if there became a Democrat majority, recently said, “Democrats
are not about impeachment–Democrats are about bringing the country
together. I am the leader. Our caucus
will decide where we’re going. I don’t see us going to a place
of impeachment.”
With “opposition” leaders like this, clearly any impeachment will come only through a massive resistance throughout society that does not take orders from people like Pelosi, but instead charts its own path and does not stop until this regime is driven out.
The World Can’t Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime!
