There is not going to be some savior from the
Democratic Party. This whole idea of putting our hopes and energies
into “leaders” who tell us to seek common ground with fascists and
religious fanatics is proving every day to be a disaster, and actually
serves to demobilize people.
When asked on MSNBC’s Hardball if the Democrats would move to impeach Bush if they gain a majority in Congress, Howard Dean answered:
I doubt it. It’s possible. I mean, no doubt,
there will be investigations because there’s been so much corruption in
the White House and the vice president’s office, even the Republican
Senate president is under investigation for insider trading. The
Republican House leader had to resign. The new Republican House leader
just killed all the ethics legislation. It’s
pretty much of a culture of corruption on the Republican side in
Washington now, and I think you’re certainly going to see some
investigations.The
Democrats believe that we need to do something about jobs, we need to
fix our security or especially our port security. We want honesty and
openness back in our government, so we want to have real ethics
reform. That’s a big list of important things. You
know, unless there’s a terrible smoking gun, I think impeachment is
going to come pretty low on the list, because we have got to really
turn this country around and that is a big job.
First we must ask Mr. Dean what exactly qualifies as a “smoking gun”? How about blatant lies to justify an unjust war on Iraq, or the torture, massacres of civilians, chemical weapons, and other war crimes committed by the Bush regime in Iraq? How about a blatant illegal government spying operation? How about leaving thousands to die in New Orleans? We could go on, but apparently none of these crimes are outrageous enough for Howard Dean.
While Dean frames the problem as corruption, the people of Iraq, the millions suffering from AIDS in Africa, detainees at US torture chambers around the world, and women whose right to abortion is being taken away are subject to a deliberate policy of permanent war on the world and the imposition of fascistic and theocratic measures inside the US. The problem is not simply corruption, but a deliberate and deadly program with which the Democratic Party leadership either agrees with or is not willing to fundamentally challenge. Dean and the Democrats tout their recent “port security” legislation, which only played on anti-Arab racism and a “war on terrorism” used to justify police state measures. These are the same people who recently voted overwhelmingly to make the Patriot Act permanent.
While many are looking to the 2006 elections to be a referendum on the Bush regime’s agenda and a chance to bring about impeachment, Howard Dean is telling us it’s not going to be. With friends like these, who needs enemies?
The fact is, if there is going to be impeachment or indictments, it is going to come about through the actions of millions of people out in the streets, refusing to be bound by the official “opposition” politics being set by Dean and the Democratic Party leadership.
The World Can’t Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime!
