Letter from World Can’t Wait organizer in New Jersey.
I had never heard of World Can’t Wait until a few weeks ago. I felt isolated in my New Jersey suburb, wanting to do something but not knowing what direction to head in. Within days of seeing World Can’t Wait’s demand to Bush in the New York Times, I had already gotten flyers and bus tickets from the organization.
Initially the student body of my High School seemed hesitant to act.
What will this accomplish? Isn’t the organization too broad in their cause? What if I’m not as leftwing as other people in the organization?
What will this accomplish? Protesting will raise international awareness to Americans and the entire world about our growing discontent with the president. Protesting will weaken Bush’s power because he will not be able to continue to pursue programs like domestic spying in fear of lower popularity ratings.
What will this accomplish?
We will drive the Bush Regime out of the White House!
I have heard many people complain this World Can’t Wait has too broad a mission. To take slivers of problems does not equal a finite solution.
WCW is not trying to eliminate various parts of the Bush Regime; the goal is driving Bush out completely.
When I was having political discussions with peers, I would ask them where they would rate themselves on a political scale of one to ten. One is reactionary and ten is radical. All the students that came out on the protests realized that protestors represented every number.
I told the students who took flyers from me that this was a promising step for a better future. I told them that this was not enough that being awake and knowing the facts was only half the battle. I explained that after understanding the treachery of the Bush regime that it was our duty to act. That we needed to go out and protest. That they needed to hand out fliers and help spread the word.
This same idea holds true to everyone reading this article.
The fact that you’re here and on the WCW website means you know the facts, and that there is hope for our future. But we need to go beyond self-understanding of the issues. We need to teach others, we need to protest, and we need to donate so that WCW can continue. I told my classmates that it is our duty as American citizens not to rest until
Bush is driven out of office.
