In organizing for the upcoming State of Emergency protests and reflecting on the
moment we must seize, I kept thinking of an analogy an organizer in DC used in
describing a mood shift in the country and what’s up in the world.
Up in Maine
the winters stretch out over several months and much of the land freezes
over,
including the rivers. Toward the end of
the winter, people in town begin to speculate and anticipate the day
when the
ice will give out and the river will start flowing again. This
has developed over generations in Maine and folks in town make
annual bets on the day when the river will begin to rush down stream
again.
There is a period of transition where there is a shift in
the weather and pressure from the water begins to cause the ice to crack and
spider web formations spread on the surface. The cracks start developing and there is a
churning. You can hear the river
groaning.
There is a possibility of the ice freezing over again or the
water busting through.
If your eyes are open you can see the cracks. If pause for a moment and tilt your head
toward the river you can hear it groaning.
We are in that moment.
A moment of two worlds colliding. Will the river freeze over and cracks disappear
or will they bust open?
Many are standing at the river’s edge, some with arms folded
and some poised to act. If you can hear
the groaning YOU MUST ACT. Yes there are
dangers in icy waters, but far greater dangers if the river’s cracks shrink up
and freeze over.
The Future is Unwritten.
Which one we get is up to us.
