Letter from Chicago World Can’t Wait Organizers mobilizing High School
students to take part in history Jan. 31st and Feb. 4th.:
Today, three of us went to Kenwood High to flyer students as they were
leaving after taking finals. We were at the bus stops mainly. Most of
the students welcomed the basic message of Drive Bush Out, bring the
noise next Tuesday. Several said they would be both downtown.
There were some more extended discussions, and one student from
Kenwood and a recent grad from Hyde Park High signed up to be
organizers. The Hyde Park High grad told a poignant story: that
he and a good friend were going to enlist together in the Marines, but
his friend went first, only to be killed in Iraq.
The day after going to the funeral, he received a letter from Iraq
from his deceased friend saying “Don’t come, it’s all a lie.”
The Kenwood student responded positively to a more
ideological approach- challenging him with the legacy of the civil
rights movement, saying that you’ve got to be brave to step forward the
time is ripe, you’ve got to do it. He said OK, I’ll do it.
He was essentially against the war, also, and looked forward to
studying the Call later in the day. Both of these students gave
contact info and are interested in bringing others, and going to the
organizer’s meeting later this week.
